In August 2004, an sea-ice/oceanographic cruise aboard the
James Clark Ross to Fram Strait in the North-East Greenland Sea completed
the second stage of a 3 cruise project called "Autosub Under Ice".
This project focuses on the application of the Southampton Oceanographic
Centre's (SOC) autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) "AUTOSUB-II"
for research beneath sea-ice and ice-shelves.
This talk will introduce the use of AUVs in polar oceanography,
the history and development of the SOC AUTOSUB and outline the recent
experiences observing the AUTOSUB in action. There will be some preliminary
results from a number of successful 24 hour missions beneath the ice measuring
oceanographic data from an on-board CTD and sea-ice thickness from an
upward-looking multibeam sonar.
The ACECRC is planning to use AUVs in future research and
welcomes all interested parties to attend this talk and participate in
an open discussion at the end.
