The UK ARGO programme - past and present

The research phase of the UK ARGO programme has been running for some years. It is now on the verge of moving from the research phase to an operational one which has particular challenges of its own. The lessons learnt from the last few years will need to be acted upon for the system to be smoothly integrated into current operational methods.

Paul Whiteley joined the Met Office a year and a half ago. Started out as Databuoy co-ordinator but now works for Met Engineering Services as System Support Engineer with responsibility for technical aspects of databuoy operations. Member of the UK ARGO expert group.

Background:
Began as a Radio/Electronics Officer in the Merchant Navy and later moved into the onshore marine electronic industry. From there moved into semi-conductor fabrication. Later, a spell at university studying systems engineering. Followed by a move into Astronomy with the Royal Greenwich Observatory at their observatories in the Canary Islands, Spain. Specialising in ultra low light detectors and telescope control systems.

Returning to the UK moved back into Marine electronics and radio telemetry manufacturing and writing test software before returning to another of my childhood interests- the weather.
