Climate SST analyses at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

This talk consists of several SST topics. First there is a review and an update of the two main Climate SST analyses at NOAA. These are the optimum interpolation (OI) SST analysis which is done weekly on a 1-degree grid from November 1981 to present using satellite and in situ data and the extended reconstruction SST analysis which is done monthly on a 2-degree grid from 1854 to present using in situ data only. This is followed by an objective determination of the required distribution of in situ data needed to minimize any satellite biases in the OI analysis. The final topic is a discussion of the important SST anomaly signals during the last year.
