Dietary astaxanthin requirements of juvenile tropical spiny
lobster Panulirus ornatus
A major focus of recent aquaculture nutrition research in
Australia, has been to develop a high performance pelleted feed for the
spiny lobster Panulirus ornatus. In the wild, this fast growing tropical
species will reach 1 kg in size after only 18 months post-settlement making
it a good aquaculture candidate. Carotenoids, in the form of astaxanthin,
are a very expensive component of crustacean feeds but little is known
of the requirements of this spiny lobster.
This talk discusses our experiment assessing growth, survival
and tissue carotenoid levels of juvenile Panulirus ornatus. Lobsters were
fed either pelleted feeds supplemented with astaxanthin or one of two
fresh mussel reference feeds - green-lipped Perna canaliculus and blue
Mytilus edulis. Results of this experiment are described and their implications
discussed in the context of pelleted feed development for this species.
