Sustainable marine ecosystems in the south east Australia region
Sustainable marine ecosystems in the south-east Australia region
The southeast maritime region of Australia is relatively
well studied and CSIRO has made many valuable contributions to our knowledge
of its biology, chemistry and physics. This presentation will review
the where, who, why and what of the newly constituted South East Research
Group.
Our ongoing research activities into marine ecosystems
include a significant contribution to our knowledge of SE fisheries,
regional habitats and, on a more local scale, the effects of anthropogenic
impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Some highlights of
the research undertaken in these areas will be presented. We seek to
maintain this portfolio of research projects across a range of spatial
and temporal scales while developing a more integrated approach to management
of the resource base and the marine environment. Our long term goal
is to provide the scientific knowledge needed to manage the marine environment
and its resources in a sustainable manner. Significant new research
has already been proposed to provide the SE with a more ecosystem based
approach to fisheries management rather than deal with each species
in isolation. To focus further development of sustainable marine ecosystem
science we are planning to undertake a significant multi-year, cross
Divisional project to develop a framework for Ecologically Sustainable
Development (ESD) at the ecosystem level.
