Northern Fisheries and Ecosystems

The Northern Fisheries and Ecosystem Research Group has about 28 full-time equivalent staff and a total budget parameter of about $6.2 million per year. Our research focuses on the tropical environments in the managed zone of the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF), extending east of Cape York, Queensland, to Cape Londonderry in Western Australia, and shared fish stocks in international waters adjacent to Australia’s northern EEZ.

This research group builds on the extensive research supporting the management of Australia’s valuable tropical fisheries and will support the management of the naturally varying resources; gain an understanding of ecosystem drivers and processes; and take a holistic approach to multi-species fisheries, ecosystem, and conservation management research.

The vision for this research group highlights the importance of integrated, multi-disciplinary approaches which have influenced our decision to adopt a Leadership Team model with five science components (Fisheries Uncertainty and Variability, Prawn Recruitment and Variability, Effects of Fishing, Ecosystem Characterisation and Conservation and Land/Sea Interaction) and two important functional components (CMIS relations and Staff Relations and Communication). Currently, about 75% of our resources are applied to research in the Sustainable Fisheries (SF) theme, with the remaining 25% in Sustainable Marine Ecosystems (SME). Over the next 3 to 5 years, we plan to shift the balance of our research to increase the emphasis in the SME theme (about 60% SF: 40% SME) to reflect the growing need for ESD management of fisheries.

In this seminar, the northern marine environment and stakeholders are summarised and the research directions we are taking are demonstrated by the broad objectives and general approaches of each research component, including our current projects and proposals.
