Torres Strait Marine Resources -
Integrated Ecosystem Science for Sustainable Management
Torres Strait is an exciting and challenging area to work
on sustainable marine ecosystems. The people depend heavily on the sea.
The area is covered by a treaty with PNG, so there is strong interaction
across our complex marine border and a commitment to manage the area
for the benefit of the TS people and to protect their traditional way
of life. And it is scientifically interesting; it presents high contrasts
within a compact region, it has particular biogeographic significance
and there is a considerable base of existing knowledge. Within the new
Torres Strait extension of the CRC-Reef, our research group is committed
to research on the sustainability and ecological impacts of certain
fisheries, to large-scale mapping and understanding the dynamics of
physical and biological components of the ecosystem, and to providing
support, through management strategy evaluation, for sustainable management.
