The OFAM output
Before implementing the Bluelink ocean
forecasting system, we have done several runs of the model in hindcast mode.
A general description of them is given at
http://www.cmar.csiro.au/staff/oke/BRAN.htm.
The reanalysis runs have the names like BRAN*. The runs were started from spinups
of the model and the results from these are also available.
For CSIRO users the easiest and quickest way to access the
data is to look at the netcdf files on the local network. Most files are beneath
/home/blue1/fie048/BLUE_LINKS although some of the mean fields are only accessible from
the linux box "rsl" on the local disk /srv/www/htdocs/dods-data/bl.
External users can access the data using an OPeNDAP client. The base url is
http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/.(Information about
OPeNDAP is available at http://www.opendap.org/.)
A tool named getnc which enables OPeNDAP data to be read into matlab is described at
http://www.marine.csiro.au/sw/matlab-netcdf.html. An example
matlab script that uses getnc to retrieve the data is named
get_time_series.m.
The relevant data are then found under 8
subdirectories BRAN2.2, BRAN2.1, MonthlyMeans, SPINUP4Means, SPINUP5, SPINUP4Means, SPINUP5Means and
SPINUP4Means. To understand the names of these directories we
need to know a little more about the hindcast run itself. First there was a spinup run - SPINUP4;
this goes from 1 January 1991 to 31 March 2005. The spinup was then restarted as SPINUP5 with some
changes intended to correct a warm bias. One important change was to one of the parameters of the Chen
mixed-layer scheme. SPINUP5 was started using the 1 January 1993 fields of SPINUP4 and continued to
31 December1997.
The final state of
SPINUP5 was then used as initial conditions for the BRAN2.1 reanalysis run. We have archived the
output from 14 October 1992 to 31 December 2006. It should be noted that the BRAN2.1 run is itself
divided into two parts in which different forcing fields were used. The
first part was from 1 July 1992 to 29 August 2002 and was forced with
the ERA40
data (2.5 X 2.5 degrees, 6 hourly). The second part was forced by high resolution ECMWF
forecast fields (0.5 X 0.5 degres, 6 hourly).
BRAN2.2 was then started using the end part of the BRAN2.1 run for its initial conditions. It uses a different
method of data assimilation, however. Note that BRAN2.2 is referred to as BRAN_EXT in some documentation
The relevant data are spread over 8 subdirectories which are, in turn, divided into other
subdirectories. The base subdirectories are named BRAN2.2, BRAN2.1, SPINUP4,
SPINUP5, BRAN2.1MonthlyMeans, SPINUP4and5Means,
SPINUP4Means and SPINUP5Means.
BRAN2.2, BRAN2.1, SPINUP4 and SPINUP5 have identical
subdirectories whose contents are described below.
- eta, temperature, salinity, u,v and w
All of these fields are stored as daily means, one per file. They have
names like ocean_VAR_yyyy_mm_dd.nc where VAR can be eta, temp, salt, u,
v or w. eta, the only 2-dimensional field here, is the surface
height (NB
the model is not forced by atmospheric pressure, so the isostatic
response is missing). The units are MKS for all variables
and u and v are eastwards and northwards pointing velocity components
respectively.
Each field is in a subdirectory VAR. Thus the url to the first salinity
file is
http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/BRAN2.1/salt/ocean_salt_1992_10_14.nc.
The url to the last temperature file in the high resolution run is
http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/BRAN2.1/temp/ocean_temp_2005_03_28.nc. The BRAN2.2
fields are very similar. For example there is an eta field at
http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/BRAN2.2/eta/ocean_eta_2007_02_10.nc.html.
- surface forcing fields
The forcing files are not available
because we have used ECMWF products and have not received permission
from ECMWF to redistribute them.
- miscellaneous files
These are stored in the subdirectory misc. At present this contains the grid specifications file. See for example http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/SPINUP4/misc/grid_spec.nc.
BRAN2.1MonthlyMeans is at
http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/BRAN2.1MonthlyMeans. It contains three
types of monthly mean files for the BRAN2.1 run.
SPINUP4and5Means, SPINUP4Means and SPINUP5Means
are very similar. Note that Spinup4and5 is actually a composite constructed using 1993-1997 Spinup5 and 1998-2004 spinup4 inclusive. SPINUP4Means and SPINUP5Means each have a subdirectory MonthlyMeans. Likewise SPINUP4Means and SPINUP4and5Means have a subdirectory MonthlyClimatology. The contents of these directories are described below. (Note that, for historical reasons, different naming conventions were followed for spinup4and5.).
- VAR_yyyy_mm.nc
Monthly mean files of the form VAR_yyyy_mm.nc where VAR = eta, salt,
temp, u or v (with the obvious meanings), yyyy is the year and mm is
the month. These files for spinup4 were calculated for the entire spinup run which goes from January 1991 to March 2005 inclusive. An example url for
spinup4 is http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/SPINUP4Means/MonthlyMeans/eta_2001_06.nc. Spinup5 monthly means were only calculated from January 1993 to December 1997. An example url for
spinup5 is http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/SPINUP5Means/MonthlyMeans/u_1996_06.nc.
- VAR_mm.nc
Monthly climatology files of the form
VAR_mm.nc where VAR = eta, salt, temp, u or v (with the obvious
meanings) and mm is the month. These files were
calculated using the January 1994 to December 2004 portion of the spinup4 run. An example url is http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/SPINUP4Means/MonthlyClimatology/temp_06.nc.
- VAR_mm_spinup_4_5.nc
Monthly climatology files of the form
VAR_mm_spinup_4_5.nc where VAR = eta, salt, temp, u or v (with the obvious
meanings) and mm is the month. These files were
calculated using spinup5 for January 1994 to December 1997, then spinup4 until December 2004. An example url is http://www.marine.csiro.au/dods/nph-dods/dods-data/bl/SPINUP4and5Means/MonthlyClimatology/temp_06_spinup_4_5.nc.
