Historical case studies

This project was motivated in large part by observed changes in the spatial distribution of SBT in the Great Australian Bight through recent fishing seasons.

In the case studies below, we take a look at the sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll a (CHL) conditions that were present in the GAB during the 2015 to 2020 seasons, and also show maps of the corresponding areas of preferred SBT habitat based on the SST-only and SST+CHL habitat preference models.

Note that the habitat preference models are based mainly on SBT data from 1998-2010 since the majority of archival tag data comes from these years; it is possible that SBT habitat preferences have changed since that time but we cannot evaluate without more recent archival tag data.
