Description: Soela cruise SO 1/81 was undertaken for an acoustic and trawl survey in waters off the New South Wales coast. Cruise aims were to examine biological processes across the shelf break (100-800 m depth). To examine the diel vertical distribution and feeding chronology of the dominant demersal and pelagic species. To map thermal structure, hydrology (XBTs, vertical zooplankton nets, nansen casts for batch fluorescence and for temperature, salinity, phosphates, nitrates, and dissolved oxygen), and acoustic scattering characteristics across the shelf break. To compare the relative trawl efficiencies of the RMTS, IYGPT and Engel midwater trawls as a function of fish size using high frequency echosounding and low frequency volume reverberation to standardize catches. To examine some of the biological properties of eddies Leo and Maria.
