A.Williams (CSIRO) Exploring and characterising marine ecosystems of the NW Region
Characterising the benthic biogeography of the deep continental shelf and slope in Australia's "North West Region", with emphasis on the processess maintaining (and threatening) biodiversity, and support for implementing the NW Regional Marine Plan and Commonwealth Marine Protected Areas.
Voyage split into three legs - Dampier to Broome, Broome to Brrome, Broome to Darwin.
Voyage Objectives
At depths of 100m, 200m, 400m, 700m and 1000m on transects in focus areas, and at 'standard' 100m and 400m sites spaced at approx 60n.m intervals, sampling will:
  • Generate swath acoustic maps of seabed terrains with the Simrad EM300
  • Ground-truth respresentative slope terrains using the CMAR deep towed camera platform
  • Collect a standard set of biological & physical samples
  • Coarse-sort, photograph and preserve benthic fauna
  • Collect fishes with a commercial sized fish trawl during leg 2.

    A. Williams (CSIRO) Tasmanian Seamounts (Leg 2). Survey and monitoring for SE MPA's (proposed Huon and Tasman Fracture) including the Tasman Seamounts Marine Reserve. Leg 2. Allan Williams (CSIRO).
    Survey to support SER Estate inventory and management performance assessment by providing interpreted benthic habitat maps, faunal inventories and documented conservation values in scientific reference sites from selected MPA areas in the SER Estate.
    The overall voyage objectives of leg 1 (SS11/20060 and leg 2 (SS02/2007) are to:
    1. Generate swath acoustic maps of target areas with the Simrad EM300 multibeam.
    2. Collect targeted biological, physical and photographic ground truth samples with a sediment grab, rock sled, epibenthic sleds and the CMR SVS or MVS camera platform form regions of upper continental slope seabed (~100-2000 m).
    3. Collect and curate benthic invertebrates to provide a biological inventory at various scales of taxonomic resolution.
    Mostly biological sampling of seamount communities using sleds is planned for leg 2. Sample locations will be largely based on the mapping and photographic ground-truthing done on leg 1, if time permits and the weather is suitable, sampling will be completed on the South Tasman Rise and Cascade Plateau. There are three piggyback projects to be undertaken on this voyage.
    Equipment used on this voyage: CMAR deep towed video system, CMAR shallow towed video system, 35mm Photosea camera system, Sonardyne USBL tracking system, multifrequency acoustic pod, sherman and beam sleds.

Acoustic swath data from Simrad EM300 used to identify sea bed habitat types. Ground truth maps by opportunistic sediment grabs, rock sled, epibenthic sleds and CMR SVS or MVS camera platform. Trap sets and LADCP casts were planned. Biological inventories at various scales of taxonomic resolution obtained by collection and curation of benthic invertibrates.
